Benjamin, Research Officer (Meat Science) for NSW Department of Industry, Skills and Regional Development, takes his responsibility for ensuring the health and safety needs of the NSW community seriously.
In his role, Benjamin shifts between laboratory, office and fieldwork, with a shared focus on optimising the capacity of the red meat industry to deliver a high-quality and safe product that meets consumer demands. Part of this includes ensuring meat is free from contaminants and spoilage, while still providing essential nutrients and flavour.
It’s this ability to be able to work in a variety of stimulating and challenging environments on a day-to-day basis that Benjamin enjoys most about his role.
“One day I might be at an abattoir collecting samples, the next I might be developing laboratory systems which must withstand peer review, and then the next I might be discussing best industry practice with interested stakeholders,” he explains.
“I find this variety and flexibility both personally and professionally rewarding.”
Outside of work, Benjamin enjoys travelling, and has recently acquired a keen interest in bushwalking and trekking – both of which complement his fieldwork perfectly.
