“The evident transition in client’s lives from the point of entry into the program to their participation in the general community is something amazing to witness,” says Ogechi, A/Coordinator, Accommodation and Respite at NSW Department of Family and Community Services.
One of Ogechi’s responsibilities in her role is to provide support to clients with complex behavioural and intellectual disabilities.
“I liaise with various organisations regarding clients’ health, finances, justice and community participation,” she explains.
Ogechi takes pride in being able to help people in our community who rely on assistance in their everyday lives.
“I enjoy having the opportunity to serve and support vulnerable individuals who would otherwise be inept at co-existing with the general community,” she says.
As part of her daily work, Ogechi works collaboratively with emergency services to ensure the health and safety of her clients. She also looks out for her clients’ families, providing them with much-needed support.
“Things have changed and as we’re working more pro-actively with other services, clients are now reporting less to police, hospitals and ambulance services. I’ve also seen families of people with behavioural disabilities supported in areas of enlightenment, awareness and respite,” she says.
To wind down after her work, Ogechi likes to listen to music or settle down with a good book.
