The Bureau is a statistical and research agency within the Department of Justice. It was established in 1969. 
About the role
The purpose of the role is to develop, maintain and extract data from the Bureau’s computer systems and statistical databases covering crime, arrests, court appearances and corrections. In undertaking this task, the person collaborates with team members and with business and technology units in police, courts, corrections, juvenile justice and the Judicial Commission.  

The successful candidate will demonstrate their abilities to do the following:
  • Develop and maintain databases and software applications for NSW crime, criminal court and corrections data.
  • Write code to retrieve data from the Bureau’s databases for reporting purposes, in accordance with specifications and time and quality standards.
  • Check code prepared by other team members to ensure data outputs are accurate and fit for purpose.
  • Investigate ways to improve existing systems/processes.
  • Undertake analysis, design and implementation work on the Bureau’s criminal justice databases.
  • Write new software applications and modify existing applications in order to collate, validate, edit, retrieve, summarise and report NSW crime and criminal justice data.
  • Undertake administrative functions related to the maintenance of the Bureau’s databases and systems, including preparing system and program documentation.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the Bureau’s computer systems (software and hardware) and of computer technology generally.
  • Report to the Data Systems Manager on progress in completing assigned projects.

Essential Requirements:
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field. 
  • Experience with one or more of the following: extracting and manipulating data using SQL or Oracle PL/SQL; managing an Oracle enterprise server; writing programs using statistical software such as SAS; writing programs in scripting languages such as Python; analysing and presenting data using tools such as COGNOS and Excel.
