Ian

“We’re not out to save the world, but I reckon we’ve made a real difference in at least our little corner of the world.”

“What I love about my job is that I get to grow essential services and develop a team of professionals that can really make a difference in the communities we serve,” says Ian, NSW Health District Clinical Coordinator and Specialist for Mental Health Services for Older People.

“To be part of that is pretty amazing,” he adds.

Ian takes pride in being able to help those within our community who are disadvantaged not only by their health problems, but also by their age and location.

“We know that people with mental health problems are clearly disadvantaged. But people with mental health problems who happen to be older, and who also live in a rural setting, are especially disadvantaged,” he says.

“I’m responsible for the planning, development, implementation and ongoing coordination of mental health services for older people in Western NSW.”

Approximately 20 per cent of the Australian population will experience mental illness in any given year, making Ian’s contribution to our community invaluable.

In his role, Ian has the opportunity to get out there and see how his work is helping to break disadvantage in our community, travelling around the region and gathering a team of professionals to collaboratively develop services these disadvantaged people need.

“I have the chance to see the services that I led to develop, and to make a difference to a marginalised group of people,” he says.

Outside of work, Ian enjoys gardening, exploring the countryside on his bike, and playing the piano.
