Purpose of Position

The Specialist Paediatrician will provide clinical management and treatment of patients at Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital. This care will be provided within the scope of practice granted by the MLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.


The Specialist Paediatrician will participate in the consultant on call roster, assist with the education role of the department, provide clinical care to patients, undertake the management of the nominated service and comply with child protection and domestic violence policies and attend mandatory training. 


The Specialist Paediatrician will provide, assist and coordinate a forensic medical response to children presenting with suspected child abuse and neglect.


As a member of the senior medical team, the incumbent will participate in and lead appropriate clinical governance activities and service planning and development as required within the medical services unit and across the whole nominated service. Wagga Wagga Base Hospital is currently seeking a fifth Paediatrician to join our existing team.


We require our new Paediatrician to be an effective leader, with a passion for providing world class paediatric services in a rural environment. As a key figure you will promote patient quality and safety whilst providing leadership, training, supervision, and education. A sub specialty interest would be welcomed. 


About the Paediatric service at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital

In January 2016 the new purpose built Wagga Wagga Base Hospital was opened. Facilities include a 21 bed Paediatric Unit including a dedicated 6 bed paediatric short stay unit. We also have a 7 bed purpose built special care nursery providing in-patient services. Our current role delineation is a level 4 paediatric service and level 4 neonatal unit. 


The New emergency department is equipped with a dedicated 6 bed paediatric unit. There are 38,000 presentations per annum to the Emergency Department 30% of which are Paediatric. The obstetric department delivers almost 1000 babies per year with a further 600 delivering at the nearby private Calvary Hospital.


The Paediatric unit has very strong links to the Sydney Children's Hospital Network.


This position provides a great opportunity to practice a wide range of Paediatric medicine in both a public and private setting.

Selection Criteria

Current registration as a Specialist Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) as a Specialist Paediatrician as provided for in the Staff Specialist (State) Award. Advanced Trainees who will be awarded their Fellowship within the next 6 months are also eligible to apply. Evidence, after full registration, of no less than five years in the practice of paediatric medicine in New South Wales Health System or in any other institution deemed by the MLHD to be of equivalent standing inclusive no less than three years in supervised specialist training and/or experience. Demonstrated significant experience in the relevant nominated specialty practice and evidence of competence in skills relevant to Australian rural hospital practice, including trauma and emergency scenarios A willingness to commit to an equitable hospital on-call roster as per the Staff Specialist State Award, and commitment to participate in the paediatric forensic service gaining additional skills and training where necessary. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health service colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team. Willingness to teach medical students and other staff of the hospital when reasonably requested with demonstrated understanding of and commitment to clinical quality improvement and peer review, Equal Employment Opportunity and Occupational Health Safety and Rehabilitation.
