Purpose of Position

The Visiting Medical Officer will provide clinical management and treatment of patients in at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. This care will be provided within the scope of practice granted by the MLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.


The Visiting Medical Officer will participate in the consultant on call roster, assist with the education role of the department, provide clinical care to patients, undertake the management of the nominated service and comply with child protection and domestic violence policies and attend mandatory training. This is a part time position of 0.4 FTE, with an expectation of 192 sessions per annum.


As a member of the senior medical team, the incumbent will participate in and lead appropriate clinical governance activities and service planning and development as required within the medical services unit and across the whole nominated service. 


At Murrumbidgee Local Health District we provide a range of public health services to the Riverina and Murray regions of New South Wales across a geographic area of approximately 125,631 square kilometres.  With around 241,000 residents living within our District we employ approximately 3,500 staff who work in our 31 facilities and support services.  Our facilities include a Regional Base Hospital, Base and District Hospitals, Multi-Purpose Services and Community Health Facilities.


About Us
Wagga Wagga Base Hospital (WWBH) is one of the busiest rural hospitals in NSW with 300 beds over 40,000 emergency presentations, 1,100 births and approximately 11,000 operations each year.  With the new hospital being built in 2016. WWBH provides medical, surgical, paediatric, obstetric, rehabilitation, and mental health acute and sub-acute inpatient services.  Specialties include cardiovascular, gastroenterology, renal medicine, obstetrics, orthopaedics, psychiatry and paediatrics. There is also the provision of a full range of allied health and support services.


About the role
We are inviting applications for four (4) new Visiting Medical Officers to work 0.4FTE or 192 sessions per year.


We require our new Anaesthetists to be experienced leaders with a passion for providing effective anaesthetic services in a rural environment. As a key figure you will promote patient quality and safety whilst providing leadership, training, supervision, and education.


Successful applicants will:

  • Have fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists or equivalent 
  • Be registered as a specialist in Anaesthesia with the Medical Board of Australia 
  • Have the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary health care team.

Selection Criteria

Evidence of Fellowship of Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. Advanced Trainees, approaching fellowship in their last 6 months of training are also encouraged to apply. Current registration as a Specialist Anaesthetist Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia. Or Advanced Trainees approaching Fellowship and Specialist registration. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health service colleagues as part of a multi disciplinary health care team and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients, colleagues and staff and to work as an effective member of the clinical team Demonstrated significant experience relevant to Anaesthesia practice and evidence of competence in skills relevant to Australian rural hospital practice, including trauma and emergency scenarios. Demonstrate willingness to teach medical students and other staff of the hospital when reasonably requested with demonstrated understanding of and commitment to clinical quality improvement and peer review, equal employment opportunity and Occupational Health Safety and Rehabilitation.
