“It’s not just all about spreadsheets.”

“I sit down with stakeholders to learn and understand more about our customers and business processes, as well as to listen to ideas they may have. After discussing various possible solutions that might help, I work with my team to generate insights using various specialised software and techniques, such as statistical analysis, data matching and data mining,” says Michael, Assistant Director Operations Analytics for the NSW Department of Finance, Service and Innovation.

“By learning about our organisation’s business processes and customers, I get the chance to use data and analytics to tell a compelling story around tangible solutions that can enhance customer experiences with NSW.”

As more high-profile companies around the world are focussed on ‘analytics-driven’ businesses, Michael is excited about how his profession is evolving.

“I love my work. I’m passionate about what I do and I don’t think I would want to change that. I love every aspect of my work, especially that I’m constantly being challenged to find new solutions for problems,” he enthuses.

“The analytics environment is an ever-changing environment – I see new developments every day. I’m in a fortunate position to work with leading technological solutions,” he says.

Analytics is Michael’s true passion, and he even keeps it up outside of office hours.

“I volunteer for a non-profit organisation which uses exercise to combat depression, where I assist with analytics of program assessments. The rest of my time is taken up by my lovely wife and four-year-old daughter who keep me on my toes!”
