“Most days you can find me out on the water – whether I’m working or not.”

“Water plays an important part of my life - I enjoy exploring and doing outdoor activities,” says Karen, Fisheries Officer for the NSW Central Coast Fisheries Compliance.

“So it’s amazing that my job allows me to be out on the water on most days.”

Working in her current role since 2014, Karen plays an important part in keeping our waters and their ecosystems safe.

“Some of my duties include inspecting recreational and commercial fishers both on and off the water to ensure their fishing activities are within the law, inspecting oyster leases and other aquaculture premises, investigating habitat destruction such as the removal of mangroves, and attending education programs to teach people about the fishing rules and regulations in NSW,” she explains.

It’s knowing that she’s making a difference to the bigger picture that motivates Karen in her role.

“It’s rewarding to know that I’m utilising my university degree and assisting in the sustainability of fisheries resources in NSW for future generations,” she says.

Karen joined the agency at the same time as 11 other officers from various career backgrounds.

“We were a diverse bunch of people – some had university degrees and/or came from fisheries, however there was a builder, butcher, lifeguard, police officer, research officer, and a few correctional officers who changed their careers and brought with them knowledge and experience from their past positions, which added value to the team,” she says.

Even outside of work, Karen enjoys being out and about.

“I love snowboarding, surfing, cycling and playing team sports such as AFL. Otherwise, I spend time with my friends watching live music and attending festivals,” she says.
