Richard

“We strive to do the best we can for our clients even when it means taking the more difficult path.”

Working as Principal Guardian for NSW Department of Attorney General and Justice, Richard provides a voice for those in our community who would otherwise find it difficult to get the support they need.

“We assist people with disabilities to make sound decisions, but only in areas where their disability interferes with their decision-making. We also provide substitute consent for medical and dental treatments,” Richard explains.

Advocating for clients inevitably comes with its share of challenges. Guardians rely on training and a wealth of varied experiences to prepare them to meet those challenges.

“In the course of our work, we often need to deal with high levels of family conflict. We need to be assertive, competent negotiators with a comprehensive repertoire of strategies to deal with a range of challenging behaviours. We’re also expected to juggle large and complex caseloads,” he says.

Despite its challenges, being able to work with a supportive team and helping to deliver positive outcomes for his clients keeps Richard motivated in his job.

“I work with a great team of fellow guardians. My colleagues provide much-needed advice, emotional support and experience. We always strive for the best possible outcomes for our clients – it’s not always possible, but when achieved, it’s gratifying.”

Outside of work, Richard enjoys tinkering in his shed and outdoor activities like bushwalking and gardening. Indoors, he likes to read, cook, and socialise with friends and family.
