At Murrumbidgee Local Health District we provide a range of public health services to the Riverina and Murray regions of New South Wales across a geographic area of approximately 125,631 square kilometres.  With around 241,000 residents living within our District we employ approximately 3,500 staff who work in our 31 facilities and support services.  Our facilities include Base and District Hospitals, Multi-Purpose Services and Community Health Facilities.

About Us
Wagga Wagga Base Hospital (WWBH) is one of the busiest rural hospitals in NSW with 300 beds over 40,000 emergency presentations, 1,100 births and approximately 11,000 operations each year.  WWBH provides medical, surgical, paediatric, obstetric, rehabilitation, and mental health acute and sub-acute inpatient services.  Specialties include cardiovascular, gastroenterology, renal medicine, obstetrics, orthopaedics, psychiatry and paediatrics. There is also the provision of a full range of allied health and support services.  Two medical schools, UNSW and Notre Dame, have medical student rotating through the hospital, including anaesthetics.

About the role
We are inviting applications for Visiting Medical Officers to work in our vibrant Anaesthetic Department. Reporting to the Clinical Director of Anaesthetics and joining a growing medical workforce including 22 specialists, this is a highly sought opportunity to join an experienced, welcoming and supportive team. The department consists of Visiting Medical Officers, Staff Specialists, Provisional Fellows, Trainees and Medical Officers. The department is accredited for 24 months of ANZCA training.  Case-mix involves most surgical specialties including general surgery (and all surgical sub-specialties with the exception of cardiothoracic and neurosurgery), including paediatric surgery, as well as orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecological surgery, interventional radiology, endoscopy, and cardiac investigation support.  The department also manages an acute pain service, with specialist pain nurse support.

We are recruiting primarily to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and there is also the opportunity to be credentialed at our district surgical hospitals to enable the successful applicants to provide services to these sites.

Provide contemporary comprehensive specialist services in Anaesthesia for optimal patient outcomes. 

Reporting to the Clinical Director of Anaesthesia as a Visiting Medical Officer in Anaesthetics providing from 96 sessions per year or up to fulltime equivalent, additionally taking part in after hours service provision including on-call and weekend cover of at least 1 weekend per 80 sessions or approximately 1 in 10 weekends. 

We require our new Anaesthetists to be experienced leaders with a passion for providing effective anaesthetic services in a regional environment. As a key figure you will promote patient quality and safety whilst providing leadership, training, supervision, and education.

Provide and support training to clinicians across multiple disciplines to achieve quality education and safe clinical practice.

  1. Holds registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist in Anaesthetics
  2. Demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  3. Demonstrated significant experience relevant to Anaesthesia practice and evidence of competence in skills relevant to Australian rural hospital practice, including trauma and emergency scenarios.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to teaching, continuing education, research and quality improvement.
  6. Availability to participate in an on-call roster inclusive of weekends and to respond on site within a reasonable time.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to behaviours which align to the NSW Health CORE values and MLHD Values, goals and strategies.
