About this role

The Diagnostic Entomologist is responsible for the diagnosis of invertebrate samples submitted for identification through the Plant Health Diagnostic Laboratory (PHDS). This role will combine accredited sample management skills with applied ecological and biosecurity understandings to interpret results and problem solve.


What you will be doing?

  • Diagnose, or work with a team to diagnose, a range of invertebrate pest samples as required.
  • Interpret results and issue detailed and complex reports to inform decision making.
  • Maintain an expansive knowledge of plant and animal pests, their distribution, ecology and biosecurity importance.
  • Work collaboratively with other disciplines and resources from other sites to ensure the broad range of invertebrate diagnostics skills and tools within NSW DPI provide timely and accurate diagnostics.
  • Ensure compliance with the Quality Management System and current standards to meet ISO17025
  • Provide specialist advice and guidance on the identity of invertebrates of biosecurity concern to inform and underpin biosecurity policy development.
  • Promote and maintain a safe workplace culture in the laboratory.
  • Comply with work standards according to the level of appointment in the Professional Officer Progression Criteria (1-4) scale in the Crown Employees (NSW Department of Industry) Professional Officers Award.


 What you need to be successful as a Diagnostic Entomologist:

  • Degree qualifications in agricultural science or similar discipline
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively within tight timeframes and be client-focused

Within NSW DPI, the Biosecurity & Food Safety Division is responsible for effective management and risk minimisation of biosecurity threats to NSW as well as the through-chain regulation of food safety. It delivers a risk-based approach to policy and compliance, and provides regional engagement and coordination in response to emergency incidents and natural disasters impacting primary industries and the food sector.

The Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute, located 60km south of Sydney and sitting on 1600 hectares, is the DPI Centre of Excellence for Plant and Animal Health. Built to the latest PC3 standards EMAI delivers “Disease Intelligence for Disease Control” through its world class laboratories, plant & animal high containment facilities, international experts and national and international linkages. It provides local, state, national and global disease advice through NSW DPI, to landholders, growers, veterinarians, companies, NSW government, the Commonwealth, the OIE and FAO.  The research group conducts high level work of significant value to Australian plant industries at key research institutes across NSW.
