An exciting opportunity to join Sydney Local Health District!

We are looking for Genomics Bioinformatician to join a dynamic and dedicated team.

This is a new position established by the Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) for its Genomics Network located at the Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) Hospital. 

The purpose is to provide core support in bioinformatics to a number of health professionals working in genomics. The scope is broad including germline, somatic and microbial genetics.  As required, the successful applicant might need to collaborate with other bioinformaticians within the SLHD (RPA and Concord Hospitals), the University of Sydney and NSW Health Pathology.  The successful candidate will need to demonstrate strong programming proficiency, ideally with proven expertise in next generation sequencing genomic analysis.

Your new role…
  • Assess, maintain and monitor the necessary informatics infrastructure within the SLHD for a number of health professionals working in genomics. This will include liaising with relevant IT department for data upload, analysis, storage and back-up. Further, the verification and quality control of bioinformatic software/pipeline updates and upgrades.
  • Develop and expand the capacity for genomics analysis: Set-up, maintain and monitor bioinformatics pipelines for the secondary and tertiary analyses of genomics sequencing data via the local facility and cloud computing. Develop, validate and support the implementation of customised analysis modules based on the needs of individual groups.


The ideal candidate will have…


  • Tertiary degree(s) in a discipline or disciplines relevant to the selection criteria including Medical/Biological Sciences, and/or Bioinformatics, and/or Computer Science, and/or Statistics and/or relevant experience. A postgraduate degree relevant to bioinformatics would be an advantage.
  • Proven proficiency in bioinformatics packages for next generation sequencing genomic data analysis or equivalent. Experience working with genotyping and sequencing data as well as with public genomics resources (NCBI, UCSC, 1000 Genomes etc.). Alternatively, a very thorough and in depth understanding of these issues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or skills in next generation sequencing analysis. This also includes data management and storage.

The position is funded for 12 months in the first instance and may be extended subject to funding availability.
