Position Information

Callaghan College Jesmond Senior Campus (enrolment 700 students, 12 % Aboriginal, 11 % NESB) is a comprehensive coeducational campus for students in Year 11 and 12. The campus has a strong focus on academic success, curriculum innovation, student well-being and vocational education delivery.

There is a strong partnership with the Muloobinbah local AECG, and ties with the local Aboriginal community. Jesmond Campus offers the broadest curriculum of all government schools in Newcastle and the Hunter and has strong links with the University of Newcastle, TAFE, local industry and the community.

Jesmond Senior Campus is the largest government provider of School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SBAT) in NSW.



Selection Criteria

Applicants must satisfy the teacher training and academic qualification requirements for this position. In addition to the general selection criteria, applicants must show:
  1. Approval to teach English 11 -12 and experience and demonstrated capacity to teach English Extension 1 and 2.

  2. Demonstrated capacity to lead curriculum development and support staff to develop quality, innovative teaching and learning programs that differentiate learning outcomes and support individual student achievement specific to the needs of the new English HSC syllabus.

  3. Demonstrated capacity to support the wellbeing needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

  4. Proven ability to lead and inspire a wide range of staff in explicit teaching strategies to improve student achievement in literacy, with a particular focus on writing.

  5. Ability to lead whole school initiatives and to actively promote and support implementation of the campus and college strategic directions and to be an effective member of the campus and college Executive Teams.



General Selection Criteria

1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policies
