Mitigation Crew Member & Mitigation Crew Leader Opportunities

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS)  is the lead agency for bush fire management and mitigation in NSW. Fighting fires and protecting the community from emergencies is what we do!

The NSW Government recently announced a funding package which will see more than 300 mitigation roles available to support brigades, districts and communities to reduce bush fire risks across NSW. As part of the additional funding announced, 42 new ongoing Mitigation Crew roles are available in addition to existing vacancies state-wide.

Our Mitigation Crews operate state-wide to enhance the safety of our communities bush fires and other hazards.  From assisting with the AIDER Program to hazard reduction and firefighting support, you’ll have the opportunity to support front line operational work on a number of exciting and rewarding mitigation activities.

We offer:

  • Full-time ongoing employment

  • Attractive annual salary:
    • Mitigation Crew Member (RFS 1): $59,273 - $63,683 p.a. plus 10.5% superannuation
    • Mitigation Crew Leader (RFS 2/3): $67,192 - $73,045 p.a. plus 10.5% superannuation


What you’ll need to join our crew:

Mitigation Crew Member entry requirements include:

  • NSW RFS Bush Firefighter (BF) certification or its equivalent (or willingness to obtain within 4 weeks)
  • A current drivers licence, Class P1 or above
  • First Aid certificate (HLTAID003 Provide First Aid) or equivalent (or willingness to obtain within 4 weeks)

Mitigation Crew Leader entry requirements include:

  • NSW RFS Crew Leader (CLW and/or CLS) certification or its equivalent
  • A current Class MR drivers licence (or a Class Provisional P2 or above and the willingness and ability to obtain a medium rigid Drivers licence within 12 months, for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identified roles only)
  • First Aid certificate (HLTAID003 Provide First Aid) or equivalent (or willingness to obtain within 4 weeks)

  • Shortlisted applicants will be required to undergo a medical assessment (medical costs will be covered by NSW RFS).

  • Recruitment will be completed virtually via an assessment centre process
  • Successful applicants will be required to attend a paid Induction (dates and locations to be communicated)
