An exciting opportunity is available for a dynamic individual to join St George Hospital Team to help the Intensive Care Department as Deputy Head of Department.  The position of Deputy Director is for a 3 year fixed term, with a permanent Staff Specialist clinical appointment associated.

St George Hospital ICU is a Level 6 NSWHD service with core, Cardiothoracic, Neurosurgical and Trauma ICU services. The SGH ICU is a state of the art, award winning ICU with 36 beds across 4 “Pods”.

The Deputy Head of Department ICU will provide leadership to the ICU Medical Staff to ensure the provision of best practice patient care through:
•    Assist the HoD in setting and maintaining the strategic direction of the ICU
•    Promoting a culture of learning and excellence within the ICU
•    Promoting clinical governance accountabilities for medical staff within the Department
•    Assist the HoD in developing and maintaining strategies to manage patient throughput and length of stay in accordance with KPIs
•    Assist and Managing resources including the management of the allocated budget
•    Undertaking workforce management responsibilities for Medical Staff in the ICU
•    Fostering and supporting research and teaching in the ICU
•    Achieving and/or maintaining College of Intensive Care Medicine accreditation for the ICU

The majority of Consultants will have conjoint appointments with the University of New South Wales and are involved in undergraduate education as well as College education activities.
Intensive Care Specialist position with clinical duties across ICU beds in 4 ICU "pods" including a cardiothoracic ICU "pod" and ward consultation.  
The staff specialist will have a specific role as supervisor of training for College of Intensive Care trainees and AHPRA trainees in the department.  
The staff specialist will be a member of the senior medical team covering the hospital TPN service.  The Intensive Care Unit is a Level 6 NSWHD service with approved training for core, Cardiothoracic, Neurosurgical and Trauma ICU.  
Staff Specialists have clinical, administrative, educational and quality assurance responsibilities.  
The majority of staff specialists will have conjoint appointments with the discipline of Anaesthetics, Emergency, Medicine and Intensive Care at the University of New South Wales and are involved in undergraduate education.  

Staff specialists are responsible to the Director of the Department, A/Prof Theresa Jacques.  Intensive Care staff specialists deputise for the Director of Intensive Care in promulgating the operational policies, supervising junior medical staff and maintaining the clinical standards of the Department of Intensive Care.

  1. Current Registration with Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA). Candidate to provide AHPRA Registration Number on application.
  2. Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand with at least 5 years' experience and demonstrated subspecialty training and experience in a broad range of Intensive Care medicine including trauma and cardiothoracic services.
  3. Demonstrated personal qualities of clinical leadership including excellent communication skills, time management, negotiation skills, team building and ability to undertake basic workforce management functions such as performance management.
  4. Demonstrated ability to implement and improve strategies around patient safety, patient throughput, length of stay, continuity of care, and clinical variation.
  5. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate as a Senior Medical Practitioner including modelling a high standard of professional behaviour to junior medical staff.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to teaching at speciality registrar, junior medical officer and undergraduate levels.
  7. Demonstrated ongoing contribution to the development, dissemination, and translation of new knowledge and practices commensurate with work in an academic teaching hospital environment.
  8. Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the CORE values of NSW Health.
