As a Senior Software Engineer with Service NSW, you’ll work on game-changing products and services that millions of people use every day. At the front face of digital transformation in government, you’ll use the newest technologies to solve problems and build fast, stable software that matters.

Your day-to-day 

  • Working with other engineers, designers and product managers to develop features and improvements to products, maintaining a high level of quality 
  • Developing features and improvements with minimal guidance or support from other team members as well as collaborating with the team on larger projects. 
  • Experimenting and following your interests to deliver innovative solutions to obstacles to team efficiency and moderately complex technical problems  
  • Collaborating with other team members from the larger organisation 
  • Mentoring Junior and Mid-level Engineers 
  • Working with the reliability engineers and product team members to ensure the availability goals of the product are met, and participating in the Incident Management on-call rotation 

Your skills and experience 

Essential:

  • Expertise in software development. Experience in one or more of the below programming languages, with an openness to upskilling/cross-skilling:  
    • Kotlin 
    • Java (Springboot) 
    • JavaScript/TypeScript (ReactJS) 
    • Golang  
  • Excellent understanding of systems thinking and technical design with an ability to deliver end-to-end solutions  
  • Consideration for both customers and security. You are motivated by delivering valuable outcomes to your users, whilst also having a passion for security by design 
  • Stong attention to detail, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. You strive for the best quality code, paying particular attention to code reusability, extensibility, maintainability, scalability, and security. You thrive in a team environment 

Desirable: 

  • A desire for continuous improvement; you are someone who is always striving to improve processes and outcomes. You value close feedback loops, and the concepts of iteration and incremental improvement. 
  • Firmly grounded computer science and engineering fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns

An original and analytical thinker who is super curious, loves challenges and can demonstrate judgement and complex decision making. A lifelong learner who is excited about new concepts and ideas, with a willingness to learn new programming languages, platforms and frameworks.
