What you'll be doing

Ambulance Chaplains are part of a multidisciplinary support team that provides nonjudgmental support to Ambulance staff and their families as well as support to bystanders at traumatic incidents. As a member of the Chaplaincy Team, you will assist with the provision of 24/7 post incident support and pastoral care. This may occur at the scene of an incident, a workplace, a home or a hospital.

Chaplains also provide spiritual guidance or help to access other faith based care or welfare services and may be requested for a baptism, wedding, funeral or other ceremony. 

 

The role of NSW Ambulance Volunteer Chaplain is voluntary and therefore without remuneration

Additional requirements of this role:
  • Computer literacy with the ability to learn and operate online reporting and rostering software, and communication devices.
  • Availability to attend Induction training and orientation at NSW Ambulance Headquarters in Sydney in late 2019 or early 2020.
  • Valid driver’s licence and access to a reliable vehicle for travelling

    1. Give examples of times when you have provided pastoral care and support to people significantly affected by traumatic incidents or workplace stress, and outline the theological studies and qualifications you have gained which have equipped you for this faith based role.
    2. Requests for chaplaincy support may come at any time of the day and night. How will you manage these calls when they come and what may be some of the limitations on your availability that we should be aware of?

  3. Provide the names of 2 referees – referees must include at least 1 person who can attest to your current pastoral and ministry experience.

  

Employment conditions: 

 

  • A NSW Working with Children Check clearance number is required prior to your appointment to the role.
  • Successful candidate is required to comply with the Occupational Assessment, Screening and vaccination against Specific Infectious Disease Policy.
  • Chaplains are not paid for their honorary/ volunteer role with NSW Ambulance; however travel expenses, phone calls and other costs associated with the duties of a chaplain will be reimbursed following the presentation of appropriate documentation and in liaison with the Senior Chaplain.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a satisfactory conduct and services check, which includes referee/supervisor check, a review of National Criminal Record Check and review of Service Check Register.
  • Chaplains are provided with NSW Ambulance uniform and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as a reflective vest and a hardhat which are consistent with the responsibilities of the role.
  • To allow the chaplain to carry out their duties safely and efficiently, they are also provided with an ID card, portable radio and mobile phone (if required).
  • NSW Ambulance will provide suitable induction training and orientation to the chaplain and may provide access to ongoing training opportunities and professional development.
